Slumdog star joins Shyamalan's Airbender
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, February 2, 2009
The actor who rose to worldwide fame as Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire has landed his next acting job in M. Night Shyamalan's The Last Airbender. Dev Patel will play one of the Airbender's allies, a member of the Fire Tribe named Zuko.
Noah Ringer, a 12-year-old Texan, auditioned for the part of the movie's lead character, Aang, by sending in his submission via a website that Shyamalan used to scout for talent for his film.
Also cast in the film are Nicola Peltz as Katara, one of the Water tribe; Jessica Jade andres as Suki, a member of the Earth tribe. Patel's character belongs to the Fire nation and Jackson Rathbone (Twilight) has an unspecifed part.
Shyamalan told Variety that Patel was "already one of the guys I was interested in. Then I saw Slumdog Millionaire, and the kid just grew in my eyes."
Ringer got his plum part after Shyamalan's first choice, Jesse McCartney, had to drop out due to his burgeoning music career. "Jesse had tour dates that conflicted with a boot camp I always hold on my films, and where the actors here have to train for martial arts," the S-man explained to the magazine.
Filming gets underway next month in Greenland for an anticipated July 2010 release.
except that Zuko is a villian in the first two seasons.
is it just me or is the cast incredibly white.....considering the story takes place in an alternate Asia

This a a pretty decent cartoon show and one of the few from Nickelodeon that's truly watchable. I didn't know Shamalamadingdong was directing - very cool. I'm behind this one for sure.
