If Marlon Brando was the only actor to portray Superman's father three decades ago, then who should be cast as Jor-El in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel picture? If the first name to pop into your head was Russell Crowe (and you didn't read the headline to this story), then you must be the casting director for the movie!
Crowe is the seventh cast member revealed for Man of Steel, slated to begin filming in August. Previously announced were actors Henry Cavill (playing Kal-El, better known to his Earth pals as Clark Kent/Superman), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent, Superman's adopted father), Diane Lane (Martha Kent, adoptive mother), Michael Shannon (Zod, a Kryptonian general and adversary of Superman), Amy Adams (Lois Lane) and Antje Traue (rumored to play the right-hand woman to Zod).
How extensive Crowe's role will be in Man of Steel is unknown. The new Superman movie isn't supposed to be a new origin story but with the inclusion of Jor-El, Superman's origins on his brthworld of Krypton must somehow factor into the movie's storyline.
Meanwhile, a Facebook fan page that tracks the movie's development broke the news that offers have gone out to Connie Nielsen to play Lara, wife of Jor-El. If she accepts that would be the second film where Russell Crowe and Nielsen have starred together in, with the first being Ridley Scott's 2000 pic Gladiator.
The same site also mentions that an offer has also gone out to Henry Lennix (The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions).

It just occured to me that the baby in that picture is a year or two older than I am, depending on when that scene was filmed.
Nope. Turns out the baby who played Kal-El there was born in August of '76, meaning he would be more than three years older than I am.
He would be if he were still alive. IMDb tells me he died in 1991. Lee Quigley was his name. Looks like he died sniffing aerosol.
