A new movie project about the life of Jesus' mother Mary has been announced at the Berlin Film Festival. Mary, Mother of Christ will star 10,000 B.C. and Push actress Camilla Belle in the title role of the virgin mother.
Also starring in the film will be Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors, Mission: Impossible III) in two different roles, that of the angel Gabriel and the fallen angel Lucifer. Peter O'Toole (Troy) will play Simeon the Righteous, a just man who met with Mary and her infant child. According to The Hollywood Reporter both Al Pacino and Jessica Lange are wanted to play King Herod and Anna the Prophetess, respectively.
The picture was co-written by Benedict Fitzgerald, the screenwriter of The Passion of the Christ, and Barbara Nicolosi. Alejandro Agresti (The Lake House) will direct with shooting planned to begin in May in Morocco. Mary Aloe and Rodrigo Berlanga are producing and MGM will release the picture in 2010.
Aloe told the Reporter of her movie, "This is not a Christmas movie. This is a part of Mary's life that has never been shown on the big screen before. It takes us through Mary's youth, young love, her life as a new mother and the triumph through the absolute terror of Herod the Great's reign. It is truly a story of real female empowerment."
