Precisely as predicted, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 had a monstrous opening weekend and created a new watermark for its box office revenue. After three days of release, and counting early Thursday screenings, HP7.2 now stands with a gigantic rake of $168.5 million dollars from North American theaters. International venues have given the movie another $300 million dollars, pushing the final Harry Potter movie to within striking distance of a half-billion dollars in ticket sales.

The past three-day record holder was The Dark Knight with $158.4 million dollars. Warner Bros. was the studio that released Dark Knight back in 2008, so the top dawg baton is being passed internally (and it might be passed so again when The Dark Knight Rises opens a year from now.

After three weeks of release, Transformers: Dark of the Moon just went past $300 million dollars. Another $21.2m in ticket sales this weekend elevated the sequel's total to $302.8m. Another $17 million in ticket sales and Dark of the Moon will have beaten the total domestic gross of the first Transformers movie.

Horrible Bosses sinks to #3 this week but remains strong with a weekend gross of $17.6m (for a total gross of $60m.

In fourth place is Zookeeper with $12.3m (total: $42.3m.)

In fifth spot is Cars 2 with a diminished weekend take of $8.3m (total: $165.3m.)

Sixth place is held by the second new release this week, Disney's Winnie the Pooh. With all of the competition working against Pooh's timid, 2D animation tale, it could only muster $8,000,000 on its opening weekend.

Bad Teacher is becoming a bona fide hit for Sony Pictures. In seventh place with a new weekend gross of $5.2m, the film has now made $88.5m in four weeks.

#8: Universal's Larry Crowne is limping away with $2.5m in new earnings (for a total of $31.6m.)

#9: Super 8 is also nearing the end of its ton ten finish, but with $1.9m in new money, it has something to crow about with a total tally of $122m.

Finally in tenth place we have Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. $1.8m in new ticket sales brings its total up to $41.8m.

So...did anyone reading these words see a movie other than Harry Potter this weekend?
