November 22, 2009 - The Fourth Kind / Universal settles with Alaskan newspapers
Scooped on Monday, November 23, 2009
Universal Pictures is paying $20,000 to settle with a group of Alaskan newspapers that felt their credibility was undermined by the studio when it promoted The Fourth Kind. The publicity arm for the movie studio created a series of false newspaper reports about missing persons around Nome, Alaska to build the illusion that the events depicted in the science fiction/horror movie were based on true events. The fake articles were shaped to resemble legitimate newspaper stories and even used the titles of the Alaskan newspapers to add the appearance that they were legitimate.
After seven Alaskan publications brought their case to Universal the studio agreed to settle by offering $20,000 to the Alaska Press Club for the benefit of journalism in the northern state. Universal Pictures has chosen to not comment on the matter.
