Universal Pictures has bought the romantic comedy screenplay Merman by Jennifer Abu Hollander. Shepherding the project through development will be Imagine Entertainment which means that veteran producer Brian Grazer will be a producer on the film.

Hollander's story is about the lesser-mentioned male partner of a mermaid. Half-man, half-fish, the script's merman gets his heart broken when his mermaid fiancee leaves him for a guy that has something he doesn't: legs. Yup, the other man in this romantic triangle is a regular human guy that lives on land.

Hollander developed the story with Jeff Moskowitz. In addition to Grazer producing there will also be Kim Roth, the president of production at Imagine, and she will have an executive producer credit. Variety mentions that two other are in contract negotiations for producing roles, namely Daniel Rosenberg and Lisa Blum.

This will mark Grazer's second fish-out-of-water film; he also produced 1982's Splash which tossed then-TV star Tom Hanks into the big pool of Hollywood. [Full story]
