January 25, 2010 - Buried / Lionsgate buys distribution rights
Scooped on Monday, January 25, 2010
The first major sale from this year's Sundance Film Festival has happened: Lionsgate has bought the domestic distribution rights for Buried for $3.2 million dollars. Bear in mind that the film cost $3 million to make, so the filmmakers are happy even before their movie gets released.
The movie was screened late Saturday night to an enthusiastic crowd and when Sunday morning arrived, the agency representing the movie, United Talent Agency, was fielding offers from studios. However, Lionsgate got an early start to the process by having its president, Joe Drake, watch the movie via a screener in his Los Angeles digs while the Park City crowd was watching it on the big screen.
