The Final Destination wins second straight weekend

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, September 6, 2009

Traditionally the Labor Day weekend marks the end to the summer box office season, going out with a whimper instead of a bang. As the record books get written for 2009's close to summer, there were no surprises forthcoming at the box office history to talk about.

Warner Bros. The Final Destination retained the number one place at the box office for its second straight weekend in a row. The teen horror film tumbled 54% from its opening week gross and took in another $12.4 million dollars to bring its total North American gross to $47.5m. As it stands now The Final Destination just passed Final Destination 2 to become the third-highest grossing movie in the FD franchise. It will easily become number one since only another $7 million dollars stands in the way between TFD and Final Destination 3.

Ask Sandra Bullock how her summer has been and she'll likely tell you that it's been great. Her new romantic comedy All About Steve opened in second place ($11.2m), not as good as how The Proposal did in June for her but still good nonetheless. Inglourious Basterds remained in the number 3 position and added $10.8m more (total $91m and counting.) It's Quentin Tarantino's second-biggest picture now at the box office after Pulp Fiction ($107.9m). But poor Gamer, the latest release starring Gerard Butler and coming from the Crank filmmakers, couldn't produce a better result than debuting in fourth place with a $9.0m showing.

In its fourth week of release District 9 just crossed the $100 million dollar mark ($7m new, $101.2 total) and fell to the #5 spot. In sixth, Rob Zombie's Halloween II fell a big 65% in weekend number two out and while the film has already made back its $15 million dollar budget, ultimately the sequel's gross isn't going to come anywhere close to the 2007 Halloween movie. Julie & Julia netted another $5.2 million (its total is now $78.8m) to take seventh place, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is at #8 spot ($5.1 new, $139.4 total) and ninth place is held by the slowly tumbling The Time Traveler's Wife ($4.2 new, $54.4 total.) Finally, at tenth place is Mike Judge's new comedy Extract. Even though it was marketed by Miramax as another office comedy by director of Office Space, Extract couldn't make a better showing than just $4.1 million dollars in ticket sales. Poor Mike Judge; first Office Space opens in the same week as Star Wars: Episode I, then Idiocracy gets mangled by Fox and now Extract can only open in tenth spot. This guy's luck has to change someday.

Next week we'll get to see what all the fuss is about for Shane Acker's apocalyptic animated adventure 9, Kate Beckinsale gets frozen in Whiteout, more young women get hunted by a crazy killer in Sorority Row an Tyler Perry returns in I Can Do Bad All by Myself.
