Final Destination opening breaks franchise record

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, August 30, 2009

The fourth film in the Final Destination franchise has shown that there's still plenty of life left in this death ride. The Final Destination opened to a stellar $28.3 million to capture the top spot at the box office and also the best-ever opening for a film in this franchise. Made for a cost of around $40 million, FD4 was able to draw additional money from audiences that paid to see the film in 3-D. Still, for a movie that was released in the dog days of summer, $28 mil and change is a great opening by any means.

In its second weekend of release Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds dropped less than 50% from its opening weekend take, grossing another $20m to bring its 10 day total up to $73.7m.

Rob Zombie's Halloween II also opened in theaters this weekend but suffered from the other R-rated competition. The second chapter in Zombie's revised tale of slasher Michael Myers debuted to $17.4m. The first film opened to $26.3m two years ago but it was also on the long weekend Labor Day period.

Neill Blomkamp's District 9 dropped two spots to land in fourth place with another $10.7m (total cume $90.8m); fifth place went to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra which took in $8 million dollars more (total $132.4m); and sixth spot was captured by Julie & Julia ($7.4m new, $70.9m total.) Seventh place is held by The Time Traveler's Wife which grossed $6.7m more bringing its total to $48.1m and it's holding on in the top 10 well week-to-week. Robert Rodriguez's Shorts fell from #6 to #8 in its second week out, bringing another $4.8 million to its total $13.5m domestic gross. Opening in ninth place was Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock which amassed $3.7 on 1,393 screens. Finally in tenth place is Disney's G-Force, its hairy talking rodent film of 2009. With $2.8 million in new ticket sales this weekend G-Force has earned $111.8 million domestic in its six week run.

A couple of things to note: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has a total take of $294 million and will undoubtedly cross the $300 million threshold before all things are done. Another Warner Bros. success story is The Hangover which just passed $270 million at the box office. Finally there's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Whether you love or hate it, it's a money making machine as its total box office gross is $399,415,000 as of today. They're a happy bunch at Paramount Pictures these days.
