"I don't want to do a remake. I don't want to do a reinvention. I want to do a new movie."
That's what Tony Scott told HitFix when asked what his ideas were for Top Gun 2. Scott was open and shared his thoughts on what he wants to see in a Top Gun sequel and why it's so far removed from the fighter pilots seen back in 1986.
"This world fascinated me, because it's so different from what it was originally," said the director. Scott wants his sequel to focus on the early 21st century's equivalent of hot shot pilot Maverick: computer jocks that fly unmanned drone aircraft in war zones. "These computer geeks -- these kids play war games in a trailer in Fallon, Nevada and if we ever went to war or were in the Middle East or the Far East or wherever it is, these guys can actually fly drones. They are unmanned aircraft. They operate them and then they party all night."
Scott hopes to have Tom Cruise do a cameo showing where his character Maverick wound up in such an altered landscape of air combat. The Top Gun sequel likely won't be Scott's next picture but probably will be the one after that.

While on the media junket for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked by MTV if there ever could be a sequel to his 1986 action movie Top Gun. Could Tom Cruise be persuaded to wear Maverick's flight jacket once again?
"We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn't do it-- I was with my partner Don Simpson," Bruckheimer told the site. "And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened." While the first attempt to make a Top Gun 2 took place over a decade ago, there's been more recent talk about resurrecting the franchise.
"We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet," Bruckheimer explained. "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."
