Various Superhero shows

Posted by omicron on Monday, April 9, 2012

So I spent this weekend watching several of the animated superhero shows now airing.

As a Marvel fanboy, I love Avengers:Earth Mightiest Heroes. It's got a lot of action and humor, and they are diving very deep in the Marvel universe. In fact, Season 2's premiere was essentially a cross-over with the Fantastic Four. It appears they're leading up to a Skrull invasion.

My other favorite is Young Justice. I am not familiar with DC much, but I did love Justice League. YJ is very gritty and realistic, and while it doesn't have a huge amount of depth in terms of other DC heroes, you still see the occasional "big name" superhero. I also like how they seem to have a pretty well defined story arc and plot, with many things tying back to earlier episodes.

Ultimate Spiderman just premiered, and I watched the first 3 episodes. I am torn on this one. While is has nice art, and seems to be fairly well steeped in Marvel lore, it frequently takes a trip to wackiness, often employing the weird japanimation stuff that Teen Titans did with exaggerated sound effect and images. It also often breaks the fourth wall, having characters talk directly to the viewer. Also, I am not sure I like the whole Spidey-joins-a-team thing. I have always viewed him as a loner. Add in the fact that MJ isn't an aspiring actress or model, but rather a journalist who wants to work at the Bugle, and I have a feeling they're just tweaking the story so it fits in better with Marvel's current universe.

Past couple of episodes of YJ have really knocked my socks off. Besides having great art, the past couple have had cameos by all the "big" names of the DCU. Add in the interesting plot, and I have to say it's by far the best animated hero show on.

Ultimate Spidey continues to tease me. Great guest stars and decent art are offset by the crappy japanimation silliness, constant breaking of the 4th wall, and almost non-existent storyline.

Just watched the latest episode of YJ. I really like the art and direction of this series. I don't know if they're adapting an existing storyline or making up a new one, but it's definitely got my attention. Jakester, if you're not watching this, you're missing out. Your DC underoos would definitely be excited.

I'm working on Smallville S10 right now, but I'm not proud of it.

Really liked how this week's Avengers was adapted from the Emperor Doom graphic novel.
