Slumdog Millionaire

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Monday, January 26, 2009

Anyone here seen this yet ? I finally got round to catching it yesterday afternoon. It was p*ssing down with rain and howling with wind so I took refuge in the multiplex and plumped for this.

What an amazing movie. Completely miss-sold when using phrases like "The Feel Good Movie Of The Year" in the advertising as the journey itself is quite harrowing. In fact, an elderly couple near me left the theatre during one of the more unpleasant depictions of life for slum children in India.

It looks amazing. It perfectly captures the vibrancy alongside the chaos and deprivation that made me feel like I was back on my travels through India again. You can almost smell and taste it.

Thoroughly recommend this film. The buzz is well deserved.

I enjoyed it. I watched a screener I downloaded . . . to . . . ah . . . back up my . . . the . . .

I'm actually Danny Boyle, and I made this movie. So I feel like it's all right for me to download a screener. All those reels just take so long to load, you know?

I watched it the same day I watched JCVD and The Wrestler. They all had their moments.

*sigh* I think I'm pretty much the only person alive who isn't in love with this movie. Much to Adam54's chagrin (I'll poke him into here if he isn't back yet). I liked it - it was decent - perhaps I don't actually have a soul? This happens to me all the time though - the whole world loves a movie and I consider it just ok, so I blame myself.

I wasn't in love with it, either, if it makes you feel any better. I don't think I've been in love with a movie since True Stories.

I did have a brief and messy affair with Ed Wood, but that was a decade and a half ago.

Goiter has a hole in his soul which prevents him from loving movies, so he watches as many movies as he can, trying to fill up that hole. But he never will. :(

I think I just made myself cry.

All (Most?) joking aside, Quasar's kind of on the money.

* * *

Real life hasn't made me cry since 2003. It was 1999 before then, and 1993 before then.

I cried a lot between 1983 and 1993. Then it just sort of stopped.

Movies--even the worst of the worst--make me weep about 3/4 of the time I go to see them. Certain albums and songs make me cry, but only the ones I really, really like. Side 2 of Abbey Road makes me cry. Half the songs on the Zombies' Odessey [sic] and Oracle make me cry. Willie Nelson's Red Headed Stranger. Magazine's "Great Beautician in the Sky." John Lennon's "Mother." Gonzo/Dave Goelz's "I'm Going to Go Back There Some Day." The Ronettes' "Be My Baby."

What? This is a movie discussion board and not a therapist's couch? Well, excuse ME!

I don't know if maybe (and I don't want to sound like a travel snob here.... honestly, I really don't) that having seen the slums of India first hand, and actually getting to the point where I was assaulted (IN A NICE WAY) by a bunch of slum kids that made me feel like I was in some strange charity appeal video made it a bit more real for me, but it really nailed the deprivation tied to the amazing optimism that there is across the whole of India. The whole vibrancy of the movie, and it's pure cheekiness in the face of the fairly harrowing story of the protaganists really got me. Christ, I sound like such a total movie reviewing arse/travel twat... but I loved it!

No no, "aduronia" (if that is your real name), I found Slumdog to be sentimentalist and overall pretty silly. I'm pretty sure the first thing they tell you about screenwriting is to avoid deus ex machina, let alone revolve an entire story around the fact that your main character "succeeds" because "it is written". The main character has no struggle or action! He just kinda wanders around, glossy-eyed and mouth agape until he's rich and with the hot girl. Whatever. I left the theater rolling my eyes.

Are you sure you didn't accidentally watch the porn version?

I mean the older version of the kid. The young and teenage actors are really good, but the adult main character who's playing the game show has NO facial expression and the dopiest look I've ever seen. His performance was terrible, imho. He had the nervous/unsure expression, and the "Oh I won!" expression. Lame.

Wasn't it based on a novel? I think I remember hearing about that when it came out but I never tracked it down. If I'm thinking of the same thing...

I don't go to the cinema much outside of film festival season; I am kind of intrigued by this one, though so it'll go on the "Movies To See Eventually" list.
