May 26, 2009 - Buffy the Vampire Slayer / remake project announced
Scooped on Sunday, May 31, 2009
A remake of the 1992 20th Century Fox horror-comedy Buffy the Vampire Slayer is being developed by the rights owners, Fran Rubei Kuzui and her husband Kaz. The first Kuzui served as the director on the '92 film and both had executive producer credits on the Buffy TV series that followed.
Vertigo Entertainment Roy Lee and Doug Davison are onboard as producers along with the Kuzuis on the new Buffy movie.
The Kuzuis envision that their new movie could be a remake or a relaunch, they haven't decided just yet because they are currently fielding pitches from screenwriters. The Buffy premise is suited for just that sort of thing since in the canon it's established that a young woman is chosen every generation to be the Slayer, the chosen one to fight vampires.
However, the project is without its creator, Joss Whedon. Whedon not only wrote the original Buffy screenplay, he also served as the showrunner and story editor for the seven seasons of the TV show. The Kuzuis said that they remain open to Whedon being involved with the project at a future time. [Full story]
