July 6, 2010 - Top Gun 2 / Jerry Bruckheimer talks about sequel possibilities
Scooped on Tuesday, July 6, 2010
While on the media junket for The Sorcerer's Apprentice, producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked by MTV if there ever could be a sequel to his 1986 action movie Top Gun. Could Tom Cruise be persuaded to wear Maverick's flight jacket once again?
"We tried to develop [a sequel] and we couldn't do it-- I was with my partner Don Simpson," Bruckheimer told the site. "And then Tom took it over and he tried to develop something and it never quite happened." While the first attempt to make a Top Gun 2 took place over a decade ago, there's been more recent talk about resurrecting the franchise.
"We were recently approached again to start talking about it but, you know, nothing yet," Bruckheimer explained. "We kicked around some ideas because the aviation community has completely changed since we made the movie a long time ago. So we have to find a way in and how to incorporate the Maverick character into it."

Are Hollywood-types all this thick?
Top Gun 2
Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, after retiring from the Navy, takes a job as a civilian test pilot. It's his job to train the first active squadron of the new, technologically-advanced F-35 Lightning-II Joint Strike Fighter. When North Korea (or the 'bad guy of the week') launches an attack against an American aircraft carrier with their own advanced fighters, the Navy sends their one active JSF squadron - led by the re-activated Maverick - to shut down the Korean's squadron and their production facility.
Now, it's not very realistic, but neither is taking a class straight from their Top Gun class and putting them in combat where there would have been around 80 other aircraft that could been used. It's a movies, get over it.
So? Mr. Bruckheimer, I'll be waiting for my story-credit....
