Scooped on Monday, August 3, 2009
The rights to Lori Culwell's debut novel Hollywood Car Wash have been picked up by producers David Foster and Ryan Heppe. Screenwriters Stephan Cox and Michael Greco have already adapted Culwell's comedy-drama into script format. The book was first self-published in the summer of 2008 and the republished by Touchstone this past May.
The book follows the journey of Amy Spencer, a young Michigan woman with dreams of becoming a famous actress. Amy lands a part on a new television series but in order to sell her image to the public she has to change her looks, shed weight, come up with a different stage name, create a false background and even fake a romantic relationship with a movie star all so she can gain that most precious thing that Hollywood craves, hype. There are rumors that Culwell wrote her main character to resemble Katie Holmes, the Dawson's Creek star that's now married to Tom Cruise.
"It's easy to forget that we work in a very unique and entertaining industry, and there's a great deal of fun to be had in holding up a mirror to ourselves -- especially if it's a funhouse mirror," Heppe told Variety about his new movie.
