Reporting bugs and other strange things on the site

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, December 18, 2008

Hey all. CA 2.0 is brand spanking new, and as such there there will be things that will need to be fixed or made clearer and better. Making a site like this from scratch is a huge undertaking and natually things will need tweaks, so if you notice something that seems weird or appears broken or just plain doesn't make sense, ask the question here in this forum. There is already a short list started in my head, and maybe some of the stuff that I want to fix up is the same as yours. Maybe there are things that you will discover that I haven't and I'd like to know what they are.

While I'm really happy with the site as it looks and functions now, it's not done. I want to continue to improve it, add new features and make it cooler for you to use and spend time on here. If you have suggestions for future ideas for apps, like the HypeMeter or HypeLine, you can also suggest them in this forum.

I hope it all makes sense, more or less, but if you have questions about the site feel free to ask. I'm going to try and turn around with an answer within 24 hours of you asking it.

Thanks!

The top ten list feature in profile appears broken.

Clicking on a profile under "Top Posters" returns you to the CA home page. Click on a profile under "Recent Comments" takes you to a page which reads, "You are viewing a profile that is not yours. Please login to your acccount, or, create a new account account."

If you can't click on a profile to read about that member, then members' names shouldn't be hot.

clicking on new posts link doesn't take you to the new posts, just the beginning of the thread.

When I click on the forum link from the Ghostbusters 3 movie page, it says "There are no forums, only Zuul!" Is that normal?

when navigating through the movie database if you go to page 2 or 3, click on a movie, finish reading and hit back to go back to the database it resets to page 1. Don't know if there's anything that can be done but it'd be more convenient to just go back to whatever page you were on before clicking on the movie link.

Everything seems to navigate superbly. I just have a few standard forum questions, like posting pics, smilies, links, and the-like. Are there any special tags for the forum pages? Just wondering.

It doesn't appear that users can post pics and smiles. You should be able to post links, if not, that's a problem that will get fixed ASAP.

The forums still need some work before I consider them done. Again, if you notice things missing or broken, or you have suggestions for features found on other message forums that you would like to see here, let me know and I will consider them. I'm pretty open to all suggestions. My mind has been focused on building the news/database portion of the site and unfortunately forums had to take a secondary status at the time. Now that the front end seems to be running very smooth I can devote more time to fleshing out the forums and interactive components for the CA community.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Absolutely. I agree with that suggestion 100% and I will forward it on to the development team. When it gets done (actually when any improvements get done) I will make a post under Site News announcing the upgrades.

Jakester wrote: "When I click on the forum link from the Ghostbusters 3 movie page, it says "There are no forums, only Zuul!" Is that normal?"

It is for the GHOSTBUSTERS 3 forum at this time. I'll explain why.

I can create a forum for every movie listed on CA. You can imagine how big those forums will grow to be, right? I'm all for doing that but I had some concerns about how to manage such large message forums, listing them and displaying them on the movie's database (DB) page. Like I mentioned in the post just above, I had to put the development of the forums to the side until the news/DB stuff was working A-OK. Now that's taken care of I will think hard about making it easy to understand where a movie forum is and if a movie does have a forum.

The good news is that I can create a movie forum very easily. I will do that today for GHOSTBUSTERS 3. Eventually when I create a movie DB page I want the site to automate it and create the message forum for that movie automatically.

Omicron wote: "clicking on new posts link doesn't take you to the new posts, just the beginning of the thread."

Hmm, not quite sure what you mean. Can you provide a URL or specific example?

Both of these problems are bugs and will be on the list to fix. You should be able to view the registered users' profiles.

Indy wrote: "The top ten list feature in profile appears broken."

Do you mean the top 10 movies that a registered user can display in their profile? If that is the top 10 you're thinking of, yup, it's a bug. I already got the dev team to do some work on it before they took vacation and when they come back they'll iron it out.

mrbear wrote: "looks like there's a broken link on the forbidden planet page"

I took a look at that page and I think what you're referring to is the HypeLine graph. I think something isn't toggled right for the new HypeLines because it should be displaying. Again, I'll let the dev team know and get then to iron it out. For now I won't switch on any new HypeLines until I know the feature is working.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR SUBMITTING THE PROBLEMS! CA 2.0 is such a big site filled with tons of stuff that it's easy to lose track of problems. Having smart people looking at the site and testing things out really helps me figure out where the remaining bugs are. Keep 'em coming and I promise that they will get fixed. My dev team is on vacation til January 5, and so they will start working on fixes after they come back from a much earned holiday.

No matter where you go, there you are.

this is something probably for more on down the line when the specific movie forums are up and going a little bit, but t might not be a bad idea having some way to have the comments that are posted on the movie pages get into the specific movie forums as well so there aren't fragmented/redundant conversations going on in either place. Same thing with the comments posted after articles about specific movies if there's a forum for that movie.

Uhh...Pat...when I wrote that, I don't think There was a Ghostbusters 3 page. I was completely being a 'nad. Still, that's a very cool answer.

The site is groovy, Pat, and I'm glad it's back.

Pat the All-Powerful wrote: Hmm, not quite sure what you mean. Can you provide a URL or specific example?

I think what Omi means is that when you look at the list of threads in a forum, under the "posts" column on the right side you see something like:

20
12 new (bold link)

When you click on the "12 new," you don't get taken directly to the posts you haven't read; instead you get taken to the top of the thread. So you have to wade through posts you've already read to see the new ones.

Personally, if there isn't a "new posts" button of some kind available, I doubt I'll become a regular here. I'm too lazy to wade through tons of forums/threads to see what might be new and what isn't.

Pat's aware of the locking threads problem, Dalton. It has nothing to do with how badly you smell.

yep Negs got it right. I was going to test to see if it might work on my home computer, since my work laptop is still IE6 and is quite wonky when it comes to some things due to firewall and other installed software for work. But if she's seeing it, then it might not be just me

No, not yet. Just like there isn't a way for me to direct quote users. Both of these are on the list of stuff to fix and will be worked on starting next week.

I gotta say Patrick, you're a hell-of-a-lot more attentive to the needs of your peeps than some other websites! And I bet the use of limited HTML is in the planning stages also?

I find it a little odd that the first post in a forum thread doesn't have any information on who posted it. For example, in this very thread, the first post should say that Patrick posted it, but it doesn't. It's like the first post from whoever starts a thread is in a different format than the rest of the thread, which is fine, but it'd be nice to know which poster started a topic.

It's not a super-huge deal or anything. Just a bit odd.

First and foremost: Nice to have you back!

One thing I wanna turn your attention to though is the following: Is it possible to turn off the autoplay of embedded video files?

For instance, if I check the Watchmen page, there are two videos embedded. As soon as the page is loaded both videos start playing simultaniously. Not only annoying but distracting as hell.

If turning this off would be possible it would be great. Cheers.

This is the fault of MySpace and not me; their vids are set to autoplay. I think that there was a link offered to the video content and I will try and find them (there are 2 or 3 vids I believe that autoplay) and if I can, swap the player box out with the link. You're right, it's annoying.

No matter where you go, there you are.
