RDM's Virtuality

Posted by Jakester on Sunday, June 28, 2009

Did anyone watch? I did, and I really enjoyed it. I know it aired in the Friday Night Death Slot, but I hope it gets picked up. I thought it was smartly written and the characters were engaging and interesting. Nice casting choices, as well.

I really liked the concept that they had to run the mission as a reality show in order to help fund it. That's great, and I like how we get a look behind the "reality tv" curtain in a fictional (sci-fi) drama. That's fun.

Also, the underlying mystery of what the frak is really going on is great. I have my theories, but I'll not post spoilers just yet.

I totally forgot that this was on! I guess I'll have to find it online somewhere.

Have we heard anything about the ratings? A friend told me it got only half the ratings Sarah Connor got in the same timeslot, so it will probably never see the light of day, again.

Though, I could always be wrong...

That happened and we all let it happen.

Check the front page lately?

Not surprisingly, it didn't do very well in the ratings at all. One, it was on a Friday night. Two, it was on a Friday night in the summer. Three, they didn't really advertise it at all until shortly before it was coming (which means after all of the major shows were in hiatus).

To me, this is just another example of how much FOX hates science fiction shows. If they really cared about it, Virtuality would have gotten more advertising (and earlier), and it would have been aired at a much better time. As it is, FOX pretty much dumped it.

On a slight tangent, I'm kind of surprised that Fringe is getting another season (let alone that it made it all the way to the end of its first one). I'm really glad that Fringe is coming back, just a bit surprised that FOX didn't kill it.

I finished watching this yesterday, and I think it's a shame that it will probably be thrown to the wayside, if it hasn't been already. The pilot had some fun ideas, and I liked the cast a lot. I think it could make a great series.

Yeah. Although, I sort of expect that the crew of the Phaeton is not actually on a ten year mission, but are rather part of a virtual reality experiment of which they are completely unaware. The Captain figured it out and was "killed," or, more accurately, removed from the simulation, but he's figured out a way to hack in through the VR inside the VR. I expect all of season 1 would have been hinting at this with the big reveal being the season finale.
