Prometheus 'dissappointing' - no spoilers

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Monday, June 4, 2012

I didn't get to go, but two friends whose opinions I trust on movies, one of whom is an Alien and Aliens 'superfan' went to see it opening night and they both reported that it is not very good.

They both said similar things. Never really gets going until too late, sets up lots of questions but doesn't really try and answer them, and basically could have done with being a lot more focused.

Fatboy Roberts said much the same thing over on AICN. He also pointed out that in many ways it's very similar to Lost - big questions, no answers, narrative structure, etc. I really wanted it to be awesome. Now I'm just sad.

They did both say that it looks amazing.

Interested to see what Kermode and Mayo make of it.

That is really disappointing, I was hoping that it was going to be epic.

I'm disappointed that I don't really care.

Hey! Goiter!  Not all of us can afford to just go see movies whenever we want to!  Hey! Goiter!  Some of us have to put food on the table!  Hey! Goiter!

Look at Dr. Ake, M.D. pretending to be as poor as the rest of us!

How much do those brain surgeries net you, Dr. Ake?

Not as much as you would think. Since my license isn't real, it's a cash business and the survival rate isn't that great using equipment meant for lawn work.

Much like the bachelor's psychologist in Burning Love, he isn't licensed in the state he's currently in, or any state for that matter. But he is like a really expensive friend the bachelor can talk to.

Goiter, if you were planning on asking me to deliver Jubboiter, then ignore that comment about my license.  It's real enough.

It counts in Germany, at least.

That means you don't have to pay taxes. Pure profit!

Prometheus doesn't come out in Germany until after we've already left. We'll be lucky if it's still playing in American theaters once we're back.

I saw it and liked it. If you like movies by Ridley Scott where people are in outer space getting penetrated by slimy gross things, then this one is for you.

I watched Prometheus yesterday and I came away with a generally positive feeling about it. In the long run, I don't think it will stand out as a classic like Alien, but I think it does compare very favorably to other suspense/action films of the last decade. I didn't feel like there was ever a dull moment in it, the action was well-paced and didn't feel unnecessary (Michael Bay should take some notes), and Ridley Scott's visual presentation reminds viewers why two of his previous sci-fi movies still look impressive 30 years after their release.

The reactions I've read on the internet, including Patrick's review here, often criticize the last third of the movie as a disappointment in terms of questions left unanswered. While there certainly are mysteries left unsolved by the end of the movie, there are enough clues strewn throughout that might help you piece together at least part of the puzzle. I think you're never supposed to get the whole picture, and in some ways that's actually the point of the movie in the first place. It's kind of difficult to make my point without going into plot elements that might be potential spoiler territory, so I think I will start a separate thread for this type of discussion. All I can say is that I didn't feel the disappointment or betrayal that a lot of viewers seemed to experience. Perhaps the disappointment people feel stems from expectations that the movie would indeed answer some of "the most meaningful questions ever asked by mankind," but if those were their expectations then they probably misunderstood the film's commentary about the pursuit of such answers.

For those of you who are still trying to decide whether Prometheus is worth watching, I would encourage you to give it a shot.

I'm sure I'll watch it, but my expectations are now incredibly low. Like Alien: Resurrection low.

I would advise you to go into the movie not expecting it to be an Alien movie.

The only disappointment and betrayal I feel is the frustratingly late German release date.
