Please God NO!!! Not House of Cards?

Posted by Daltons chin dimple on Friday, October 23, 2009

OK, you can take The Office. You can have State of Play. I will even forgive you for a failed attempt to Yank-ify Dr. Who and the God-awfulness that you inflicted on Life On Mars. But leave House of Cards ALONE!!!!

David Fincher is trying to develop a one-hour drama based (never mind that the original was a four or five hour series) on Michael Dobbs' original novel and the famed Emmy-winning 1990 mini-series starring Ian Richardson.

This doesn't even scratch the surface, let alone finish the tale properly with the sequels To Play The King and The Final Cut.

It's like a drama, a black political comedy and Macbeth meets Richard III all set at the end of Margaret Thatcher's time as prime minister and follows a scheming British politician who wants to take over.

WHY, WHY GOD, WHY!!!!??!?!?!?

I liked the US Life on Mars enough. It wasn't nearly as good as the original, but it wasn't horrible.

There is only one Gene Genie. Kietel could only hope to faintly imitate the magnificence that is Gene Hunt.

Screw you, limey. That's what you get for taxing our tea! (We hold grudges for a long time, obviously.)

:-)

By the way, can someone please turn off the italic tag in their previous post that they left open?

Guess what? I got a fever. And the only prescription . . . is more cowbell!

Your tea??? As, at the time we owned the world, I think you will find it was all our tea. And as America didn't exist when the War of Independence was on, technically, we beat ourselves (fnarr-fnarr), helped by the French!

Oh, Keitel was okay, but you're right, there really is only one Gene Genie. I'm looking forward to the final series of Ashes to Ashes, although Keeley's new 'do is hi-lar-ious!

I entered a closing tag for the italics. With any luck, it'll hold.

Nope. Looks like it's up to Jakester to go back to the first post and edit it.

You'd think you'd be thrilled America is sprinkling its fairy dust on House of Cards.

American TV is now the best in the world, you know.

:P

Just out of curiosity, has UK TV ever re-done something American, or is it always a one-way street? I'm sure they have, I just can't think of anything right now.

Speaking of American redoes, Dalty, you forgot to mention Traffik, Queer as Folk, and Steptoe and Son. To name a few. Granted, it's been a really, really long time since we redid Steptoe and Son.

To answer your question, KV, here's a list. Most of them are game shows. The article points out that US shows generally get exported as is, and are not remade.

Many have pointed to Lead Balloon as being more or less a remake of Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I think a big reason for the US redoing a show instead of running the original is that a British series doesn't last a full US season, and the US market tends toward 20-plus-episode seasons. (Here I'm talking network television, and not HBO.) Three full seasons give you enough shows for syndication, and there's big bucks in syndication.
