Oscar Nominations

Anyone surprised ? They seem pretty much as expected. Anyone really think Heath Ledger has a chance ?

He has more than a chance. It is my understanding that he is the front runner. The biggest hurdle is the whole posthumous thing. If I'm not mistaken, Peter Finch's posthumous win remains the only one for acting. Posthumous nomination is far more common than a posthumous win.

It has been pointed out many different places that giving an award to a dead guy is kind of a drag. Since the night is generally meant to be celebratory, having someone come to the stage and affect the appropriate mix of gratitude and somberness for the award in the dead actor's stead casts a pall over the rest of the evening.

That said, Ledger's youth (the "Cut Down in His Prime" effect) may work in his favor. It didn't for James Dean--at least not at the Oscars. Dean won a posthumous Golden Globe for Giant, but only got as far as being nominated, come Oscar time.

The Dark Knight being snubbed for all the other major awards should work in his favor.

I don't know that it was snubbed. I think it's just that Ledger's performance is what really stands out about it. Of course, that's coming from me. My not being crazy about the movie doesn't mean it was a bad one. I didn't dislike it. I wasn't all that crazy about most of the movies I saw in theaters in 2008. (I saw a whole bunch of movies in theaters in 2008. More than I realized. Less than in 2007, so there's hope for me yet.)

The score might should have gotten a nomination, I guess, since it was finally cleared for being nominated. It's not a bad score.

I'm curious as to why Kate Winslet is nominated for 'Best Actress' for The Reader when she was nominated for that role in the Best SUPPORTING Actress category for every other award. I would consider her the lead actress in the film, and she does a fantastic job, totally deserves the nom, I'm just wondering why they only just now put her in the Best Actress category.

And to add to the discussion, Ledger is definitely the front runner for the award. I'm fairly certain he'll win.

I'm very disappointed not to see Hellboy II nominated in more categories, especially Art Direction and Visual Effects.

If there was an award just for pure imagination, or for "The demonstration of genius, to a Barry Manilow tune." then HBII would be right up there.

Let The Right One In, Ballast, The Band's Visit, My Winnipeg, Synecdoche, NY and The Fall not even nominated. Fuck the Oscars.

I am hoping Kate Winslet finally gets her dues! Wonderful actress and a beautiful(natural)woman.

And anyone who can do phone sex in a nun's habit with Ashley Jensen is cool in my book!
