Hannah Montana leads weekend box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, April 11, 2009
Miley Cyrus must have had a pretty good Friday night considering that her new Hannah Montana movie brought in an estimated $17.4 million dollars during that one day.
Early ticket receipts show that Hannah Montana is still a hot property for tween girls. Even after the box office failure of the Jonas Brothers movie six weeks back, audiences are still keen on watching Cyrus' blonde-haired alter-ego strut and sing on the big screen. While Hannah's one-day $17.4 million gross isn't as big as Fast and Furious' $30.5 mil Friday night showing, the former picture will almost certainly be crowned the new number one movie by the close of the Easter long weekend.
On its second Friday night in release Universal's Fast and Furious took in an estimated $10.6m to bring its total domestic theatrical gross up to $99.8 million dollars. DreamWorks' Monsters vs. Aliens came in third spot with an additional $9m (total $127m), followed by Warner Bros. new Seth Rogen comedy Observe and Report ($4.7m opening night), Summit Entertainment's Knowing ($2.3m, $63.7m total). The week's other new release, 20th Century Fox's Dragonball Evolution, placed eighth with $2 million and change in ticket sales. That film is estimated to have cost its investors $100 million dollars.
