Zero Dark Thirty expands, captures first place at the box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, January 13, 2013

Last week was a big one for Zero Dark Thirty, the new Kathryn Bigelow-directed docu-drama about the hunt for Osama bin Laden. The movie captured five Oscar nominations and also expanded its theatrical run, adding nearly 2,900 new screens. Those two factors propelled Zero Dark Thirty to the top of the moviegoer's consciousness, granting it a commanding $24 million dollar gross and the title of first place at the weekend box office.
The Wayans brothers new ghostly comedy A Haunted House came in second place with a very decent showing of $18.8 million dollars. Made for an estimated budget of only $2.5 million, that gives the comedy a very respectful profit already in its first week of release.
Gangster Squad had much more advertising than A Haunted House but could only come to a third place showing in its opening week. Directed by Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer and starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Sean Penn, Gangster Squad could only heist $16.7m in its first three days.
Django Unchained dropped from second place to fourth this week. Still, with another $11 million bucks Django now stands at a total box office gross of $125.4 million. Django Unchained is now the highest grossing movie in Quentin Tarantino's career as a filmmaker.
Les Miserables fell one spot to #5 ($10.1m new, $119.2m total); The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey goes from #3 last week to #6 this week ($9m new, $278.1m total); and Lincoln moved up a spot to #7 ($6.3m new, $152.5m total).
At #8 is the comedy Parental Guidance with $6.1m in new ticket sales (for a total three week gross of $60.6m).
In one of the biggest drops that I've ever seen is Texas Chainsaw 3D. Last week it was the #1 movie in the country; this week it's at #9 after taking a 76% tumble in ticket sales. Another $5.1m brings the new Texas Chainsaw's two week total to $30.7m.
And at #10 it's Silver Linings Playbook. Propelled by Oscar nominations for stars Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the film added $5m to its nine week run of $41 million dollars.
