Dragonology flies to the big screen with Star Trek writers
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, August 28, 2012

The mega-popular children's fantasy book Dragonology is now in development as a feature film. Universal Pictures is the cinematic home to the adaptation, with Star Trek screenwriters/producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci producing the movie.
First published in 2003, Dragonology postulates that the flying reptiles are real and subject to classification. The tome is part narrative, part zoological adventure as a team of "dragonologists" circle the globe classifying the beasts and their abilities, as well as gathering intelligence on an association that wants to harness the power of dragons to dominate the planet.
Universal has owned the screen rights to Dragonology since 2008 but not advanced the project very much. The hiring of Kurtzman and Orci will boost the project's chances at reaching theaters; the duo are currently one of the hottest working writers/producers in tinseltown. While they won't write the screenplay themselves, the duo will oversee the hiring of a writer for the studio.
12 books in the Dragonology book line have now been published to date, with over 6 million copies sold in the series.
