Madagascar 3 is the box office champ again

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, June 17, 2012

The weekend box office estimates for the third weekend of June 2012 are in and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted has retained top spot. The animated three-quel earned $35.5 million in its second weekend of release, bringing its 10-day total up to $120.4 million dollars.

There was no change in the second place film which is held once again by Ridley Scott's Prometheus, his unofficial prequel to Alien. While the movie tumbled 60% in its second week gross to $20.2m, Prometheus has now earned $88.8m domestically, making it the highest grossing picture in the Alien movie franchise.

What isn't so good is the debut of New Line Cinema's musical Rock of Ages in third spot. A weak $15 million dollar opening doesn't bode well for the picture's long-term box office prospects, and it's not a good showing for Tom Cruise after returning to prominence following Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol's excellent box office returns.

Snow White and the Huntsman slipped one spot to #4 this week with $13.8m in new ticket sales. Its three week gross is $122.6 million, so Kristen Stewart will keep getting new work.

Adam Sandler has a new comedy, if you could call it that. That's My Boy opened this weekend but unlike other Sandler pictures, audiences didn't seem to want to go see it. That's My Boy could only struggle a fifth place opening and tepid gross of just $13 million dollars.

Men in Black 3 is down to #6 ($10m in new ticket sales, total of $152.6m).

The Avengers is at #7 ($8.8m new, $586.7m total).

At #8, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel continues to hold a showing in the bottom 10 by adding $2.2m to its $35.1m total performance.

#9 is Wes Anderson's Moonrise Kingdom. It added another 82 screens this week and now stands with a $6.7m total.

And at tenth place is What to Expect When You're Expecting ($1.3m new, $38.7m total.)
