Madagascar 3 defeats Prometheus at the box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, June 10, 2012
Cartoon animals bested outer space meanies this weekend at the box office. In less sillier terms, what I mean is that Paramount/DreamWorks' Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted became the new number one film, bowing to a $60.3 million dollar opening. In second place was 20th Century Fox's Prometheus which opened to a neat and tidy $50 million dollars.
It's a good sign for Madagascar 3 and a fair reception for Prometheus, an R-rated film. The real telling of whether either film will be a financial success should come in their second weekend out.
Dropping to third place is Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman, with $23 million (total so far: $98.5m.)
MIB 3 is in fourth position with $13.5 million (total: $135.5m.)
The Avengers is in fifth spot with $10.8m in new money, for a six week domestic gross of $571.8 million dollars.
And the rest of the top ten:
#6: The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (new: $3.2 million, total: $31m)
#7: What to Expect When You're Expecting (new: $2.7m, total: $35.7m)
#8: Battleship (new: $2.2m, total: $59.8m)
#9: The Dictator (new: $2.1m, total: $55.1m)
#10: Moonrise Kingdom (new: $1.5m, total: $3.7m)
