Governor cast for The Walking Dead

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, February 25, 2012

Readers of The Walking Dead comic book have been expecting this news: The Governor has been cast on the Walking Dead TV series. He'll be played by British actor David Morrissey and debut in season three of the show.

The Governor is to The Walking Dead comic book series what Khan is to Star Trek. Sadistic, cruel, drunk with power and the most deadly adversary that Rick Grimes and his band of Atlanta survivors have faced, The Governor is ruler of his walled-off world. He does whatever is necessary to keep himself and his group of followers safe from the zombie horde. Some of the things that The Governor does in The Walking Dead are far more shocking than the acts of violence the mindless undead commit.

Morrissey has a long list of acting credits dating back to 1993, but he's better known to British viewers. His better known American roles are still relatively obscure; after all, how many people watched Basic Instinct 2 where he played the doctor attracted/seduced by Sharon Stone's femme fatale? Other roles in Morrissey's CV include Derailed, The Reaping, The Other Boleyn Girl, Centurion and a guest role on a David Tennant episode of Doctor Who.

Morrissey's Governor will likely make his debut at the start of season three of The Walking Dead, which debuts this October. AMC has already placed an order for 16 episodes. Filming on those shows will take place this summer. Right now the backend of season two's remaining episodes are playing out Sunday nights on the cable channel.

This is very interesting, I guess this rules out the rumor that Merle became the Governor.  I have never read the comic book to know what is supposed to happen on the series.  What happens to Shane in the comic?  Season 2 is playing up to a face-off finale between Rick and Shane.  It sounds like they could have Rick kill off Shane to finally prove that he can protect the group, only to start facing the Governor in season 3 as another threat to his authority.  Or, Shane could finally leave the group at the end of season 2, only to come across him later as part of the Governor's clan, maybe his #2 man?  Although, Shane isn't the type to be anybody's #2, so this path probably isn't likely.  I guess they could have a third group emerge towards the end of season 3 where Shane is the leader and it would cause a 3-way battle for power.

So many options!  I guess I should read the comic, but for those of you familiar with it, how closely have they been following it?

Turn your head and cough!
