Twilight's Breaking Dawn earns $139 million in its opening weekend
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, November 20, 2011

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 is now out and a proven box office hit. That doesn't come as a surprise to anyone; the only question that was left unknown was how much the movie would take in on its opening weekend. Now we know.
The first part of Breaking Dawn grossed $139.5 million dollars from Friday to Sunday, becoming the fifth highest opening weekend in movie history. However, Breaking Dawn's opening gross still wasn't big enough to best the second Twilight movie's opening weekend, New Moon. That film opened to the tune of $142.7 million bucks two years back.
Expect Breaking Dawn to cross $200 million domestic in ticket sales but drop off heavily next weekend. Friday's ticket sales for the movie accounted for 51% of the total receipts for Breaking Dawn, so it's heavily pre-loaded for people that wanted to see Bella and Edward consummate their unholy union.
Happy Feet Two was in second place but only took in $22 million dollars. By comparison, the first Happy Feet grossed $41m when it opened in November 2006.
Third place is held by Immortals, which was last week's top movie ($12.2m new, $52.9m total), fourth by Jack and Jill ($12m new, $41m total) and fifth by Puss in Boots ($10.7m new, $122.3m total).

I'm so sorry for the $10 I contributed to this number. But it was for the greater RotCast good!
