Contagion coughs all over the box office
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, September 11, 2011
Steven Soderberg has another number one movie at the box office! Undoubtedly the star power of Contagion helped elevate Soderberg's thriller to first place this weekend. While an arguement could be made that the most powerful actor in Contagion is a microscopic virus, having recognizable talent like Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard and Jude Law also helps.
Contagion debuted with $23.1 million, which is a great showing for a movie in the middle of September. That's nearly three times as much as The Help took in, but its $8.6m gross was enough to keep it buoyant and in second place overall. After five weekends The Help has grossed a sizeable count of $137 million dollars and boosted the bankability of its leading actress, Emma Stone.
Third place is held by another new release, Lionsgate's Warrior. Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton both look cut and ready to beat the hell out of each other as two brothers competing in the same mixed martial arts tournament.
The other films in the top 10 remained pretty much the same from last week, with the majority only dropping one or two spots from their showings last week. The one exception was Apollo 18 which fell faster than a rocket reentering the Earth's atmosphere, falling five positions to #8 this week.
Here's the rundown of this week's top 10:
#1 Contagion $23,135,000 (new)
#2 The Help $8,691,000 $137,093,000 (total)
#3 Warrior $5,607,000 (new)
#4 The Debt $4,905,000 $21,993,000
#5 Colombiana $4,000,000 $29,779,000
#6 Rise of the Planet of the Apes $3,875,000 $167,836,000
#7 Shark Night 3D $3,533,000 $14,797,000
#8 Apollo 18 $2,913,000 $15,001,000
#9 Our Idiot Brother $2,761,000 $21,420,000
