First look at Henry Cavill as Superman, the Man of Steel

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Thursday, August 4, 2011

Warner Bros. has released the first image of Henry Cavill wearing the new Superman costume we'll see him sporting in Man of Steel.

The suit in Man of Steel has been redesigned from the last time we saw a big screen Superman wear it in Superman Returns. The most noticable change is the "shield" on Superman's chest: it's larger than the emblem worn by Brandon Routh in Superman Returns. Also apparent in the new Man of Steel costume is the coloring: whereas the Superman Returns colors were darker and muted on the suit, here they appear to be close to or the same hue as the classical Superman costume worn by Christopher Reeve.

Also, when Warner Bros. released the photo they issued a press release that included the casting done so far. Included in the group were Russell Crowe as Superman's biological father, Jor-El; Julia Ormond as Supes' natural mother, Lara Lor-Van; and Christopher Meloni's character received a name, Colonel Hardy.

Man of Steel also stars Amy Adams as Daily Planet reporter Lois Lane; Laurence Fishburne as Planet editor-in-chief Perry White; Diane Lana as Martha Kent; Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent; Michael Shannon as General Zod; and Antje Traue as Faora, Zod's right-hand woman and another villainous Kryptonian.

Man of Steel flies on the screen come June 14, 2013.

Did Superman repurpose Thor's movie costume?

I see they addressed the "too dark" costume from Superman Returns by making this one even darker.  (Don't know what you're smokin', Patrick, but these colors are so dark they're barely blue and red.  Also, they're drab.)

I see they addressed the "too textured" material from the Superman Returns costume by adding way more texture.

I see they addressed the "too small" S shield from the Superman Returns costume by making this one comically large.

I see they addressed the "just right" cape length of the Superman Returns costume by making this one so fucking long you'd think he was a bride on his way to get married if you saw him from behind.

Oh, and nice spit curl, Supes!

I see Goits has addressed his too sarcastic responses by become even more sarcastic.

Also, I'm pretty sure that's a rubber cape.

If you examine it closely enough, you will find the word Spalding written on it.

I have to agree that this colors are not as bright as the Reeves costume but more like the Routh's.

However, I like it. And I don't think the shield is proportionately too big (though it is enlarged some), it just looks really big here due to the angle.

The costume aside, I'm more concerned about script. It better be a good story. I was a little disappointed that they chose to make Zod the villain - we've been there, done that. If you're going to reboot, go with the other big villains (not Luthor). Oh well.

After you said that, I am seeing a big similarity to the new Spiderman costume as well.

I'm not concerned about the script at all. It's the costume that makes the movie. If the costume sucks, it can be the greatest script in the world and the movie will still suck. If the costume's great and the scripts not that good, at least I can watch it with the sound off. Costume > Script.

it's the same exact fabric they used to make the Spiderman costume out of..what is all the bitching about?

it takes a true buffoon to screw up the iconic superman costume... making the "S" bigger isnt screwing it up nor is adding texture to it...

the reasoning is simple... normally the 1978 suerman suit would cost about $1000 (or less) to manufacture... THIS *IS* the suit deemed worthy of Kal-El the savior from another planet... THIS suit is probably worth $10,000 (to create) and God only knw what it'll skyrocket to once it hits the auction block.

somebody (zack Snyder) decided to get his money's worth.

My guess would be... exactly that.

The costume's not so bad.  The cape is hilariously long, but I guess it's fine beyond that.

I'm sure Snyder will give me way more than the costume to bitch about.

For a second there I thought it was Christopher Walken as superman...lol!

Also why dont they bring more superman villians to the table...like Brainiac, Metalo, that leach guy...its Superman....it would take a team of villians to really take him on...

from the above picture there really is nothing to bitch about... a texture? nah, i can live with that... the long cape? Nah... I can deal with that too... the iconic "S" shield? Nah... it's not too big for me...

everything is just perfectly fine including Cavill's age.. which is better suited for plaing the MAN of steel as opposed to Brandon Routh's version of super inspired BOY... of course who am i to complain about looking boyish?

Brandon Routh was born in 1979 and Henry Cavill was born in '83 so ... HE'S YOUNGER?????

SHHHIIIIIT!!!!
