Fast Five director Justin Lin is already throttling up for sequel
Posted by Den Shewman on Tuesday, May 3, 2011

Lin says it’s a sure thing. Opening weekend box office says it’s a sure thing. Writer is already working on it. Studio…is very, very quiet.
Not to anyone’s surprise, the $84 million outpouring of box office love for Fast Five’s opening weekend has people thinking about the next film in the franchise. And by “people”, we mean director Justin Lin. Although Fast Five stars Paul Walker, Vin Diesel and Dwayne (must…not…call…him…The Rock) Johnson are probably thinking along the same lines.
Lin told USA Today on Monday that “After this big weekend, we’re going forward…It’s pretty much 100 percent. It’s going to happen.”
“At five, we’re just hitting our stride,” Lin said. “We’re growing. People want to continue this journey.” Those people include not just the millions of Fast fans, but also many critics who applauded Universal’s reinvention of the franchise from car chases to heists.
There’s no official word from Universal, but this idea is not new to the studio: they already have a writer working on it. Two weeks ago, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Universal signed Chris Morgan (scribe to Fast flicks 3, 4, and 5) to a two-year first-look deal, and Morgan said that he’s started Fast Six. (Indeed, a post-credit coda to Fast Five indicates a new case that may involve an old friend of the family.)
Although Fast Six is well and good, Lin already has an 800-pound Austrian gorilla on his plate: he’s set to direct ex-Governator Arnold Schwarzenegger in the upcoming Terminator 5. Luckily for him, that film is also from Universal -- and we’re guessing the studio will find a way for Lin to shoot both films and still keep his sanity.
