Thursty's Stinky Box Office: When Aliens Oversaturate Edition

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, March 11, 2011

You want extraterrestrials?  You got 'em.  This weekend you get them in two new wide releases, and if you're still hungry for them next weekend, you'll get them in another new wide release.

This weekend's alien movies are Battle: Los Angeles and Mars Needs Moms.  Next week is Paul.  I'm not sure why Paul's so late to the party, but I suppose it's not really a party unless somebody's late to it.  Right?

Aliens won't be the only ones invading screens this weekend. (What is it about box office columns that brings out the crappy jokes?  Ah, who am I kidding?  I don't need a box office column to bring out the crappy jokes.)  There's also a wolf.  Or a werewolf.  Or something.  It's Twilight plus Grimm's Fairy Tales, they tell us, but with Gary Oldman.  It'll have Beastly to contend with, but it should manage to do all right despite this.  It got an American Idol push.  That should count for something.

All three of the new releases are coming to 3,000-plus theaters.  Battle: Los Angeles and Red Riding Hood are even kind enough not to be coming out in 3D.  Mars Needs Moms, on the other hand, is not so kind.  It will be filling the void left by the recalling of more than 1,700 prints of Drive Angry back down into the brimstone-y Hell whence it escaped lo those many fourteen days ago.

Mars Needs Moms is Disney, so that may give it a tiny push.  At the same time, though, it has the curse of Polar Express Dead Eye.  (They tell me Robert Zemeckis didn't direct this, but I don't believe them.)

Battle: Los Angeles has the best chance of the three to take the weekend.  I'd say the not-too-distant memory of Skyline could be a stumbling block on its way to the top, but that would imply Skyline was memorable enough (and its showings well-attended enough) to have left any impression whatsoeveron moviegoers.  (Those unlucky enough to remember it will remember itas being laughably bad.  The lucky ones will have blocked it out of their minds.  Sheesh, that movie was bad.)  Its only real competition will be Rango (Rango!), which will more than likely be slipping to second place.

I think The King's Speech might have one last good weekend left in it.  Next weekend's addition of Paul, Limitless, and The Lincoln Lawyer will almost certainly bring about the end of its months-long stay in the top ten.

Predictions:

1.  Battle: Los Angeles   $28.50m
2.  Rango   $22.25m
3.  Red Riding Hood   $18.00m
4.  Mars Needs Moms   $16.75m
5.  The Adjustment Bureau   $11.75m
6.  Hall Pass   $5.25m
7.  Beastly   $5.00m
8.  Gnomeo and Juliet   $4.25m
9.  The King's Speech   $4.00m
10.  Just Go with It   $3.25m

Disagree?  Let me know by 11:59 EST tonight.  If your predictions come closer than mine to the actual weekend grosses, I will celebrate your superior skills in the Grovel Pit.
