In its first weekend of release Tron Legacy made more than the original Tron film made in its entire theatrical run back in 1982. Still, Legacy's opening box office probably won't cause the Disney development team to enjoy any extra special Christmas bonus.

With an estimated $43.6 million dollar three-day gross, Tron Legacy easily captured the top spot at the box office. But, with an estimated production budget of $170 million dollars -- and likely $70m - $100m in marketing costs -- there's a big mountain of red standing in front of Legacy before it gets into the black. Disney pushed the Tron sequel hard and anything less than a $50 million dollar opening number will likely be seen as a failure. Unless the movie has legs that can keep it in the four four or five spots for the next month, Tron Legacy will disappear from theaters with about $125 million dollars domestic. Home video sales and rentals will ultimately decide if there is to be a Tron 3, but right now, if Disney moved to make one it would have to be made for a lot less than Legacy.

Instead of my usual analysis of the box office, I'm instead going to list the top ten with their weekend gross and total cumulative gross.

#9: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 - $4.8m ($265.5m total)

#10: Unstoppable - $1.8m ($77.3m total)
