Narnia's Dawn Treader wins sluggish box office weekend

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, December 12, 2010

No one at Fox is going to celebrate the $24.5 million dollar opening weekend of the third Chronicles of Narnia movie with any gusto. Nevertheless, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader won top position at this week's box office derby, giving the studio one of the weaker top place performances for 2010. Narnia 3 is playing on 3,555 screens and took in around $6,900 per location. The fantasy film may have legs to play across the holiday season, and if so, recoup its investors (Walden Media) a return on their $155 million dollar investment. However, it will be an uphill battle if the picture does creep into the black: so far Narnia 3 has made less than $5 million from its international venues.

Sony is also dealing with its own version of box office hangover with a tepid $17 million opening weekend for The Tourist, the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie romance/thriller. With two international stars headlining the film, audiences still weren't wooed to show up in theaters and watch the pair cruise the canals of Venice. This picture also has a lot of ground to cover if it is to recoup its $100 million production budget from first-run theaters.

Disney's Tangled drops from first place last week to third this week with a healthy $14.6m in new dollars gathered. That brings the North American gross for Tangled up to $115.6m and $160m worldwide. Somehow I don't think Dawn Treader is going to reach even Tangled's third weekend gross in that Narnia film's second weekend.

Harry Potter 7.1 dropped down two spots to #4 ($8.5m new, $257.7m total) Sometime during the upcoming work week Deathly Hallows Part 1 will move past the domestic gross of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to become the fifth highest grossing HP movie in the series. The top is still the first film, Sorcerer's Stone, with a gross of $317m in 2001 dollars.

Unstoppable, that cute little action film with Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and a runaway choo-choo, is #5 with $3.7m new and a total domestic gross of $74.2m.

Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan emerges into the top ten thanks to the film's expansion on 72 new screens. That gave the psychological drama a 130% boost in its box office results, pushing Black Swan up seven spots to #6 ($3.3m new, $5.6m total.)

Burlesque falls down four positions to #7 ($3.2m new, $32.5m total), Love and Other Drugs slips down three to #8 ($3m new, $27.6m total) and Due Date comes in late two more spots (#9, $2.5m new, $94.8m total).

And in tenth place this week? It's Megamind, the CGI toon from DreamWorks. After six weeks the movie has grossed $140.2 million dollars domestic (adding another $2.5m this week). It's not a bad run at all but when the books for 2010 are closed by the DreamWorks Animation accountants it'll be How to Train Your Dragon that earns them their Christmas bonuses, not Megamind. (H2TYD grossed $217.4m)

Next week it's the return of the lightcycles, a trip to Jellystone Park, the last film from director George Hickenlooper, Nicole Kidman's depressing movie of the year and Jack Nicholson earning a $20 million dollar paycheck. It'll be a busy weekend, huh?
