The director of the top two highest-grossing films in the history of show business wants to go to Brazil and film an indiginous people in their environment. James Cameron has announced his intentions to visit the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe and shoot some material about the tribe's way of life and their opposition against a government dam that could put their homeland under water.
"I want to return to meet some of the leaders of the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe who invited me," said Cameron during an interview with the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper." Furthermore, Cameron wants to take the same 3D camera system that he pioneered during the making of Avatar and film the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe as they go about their day-to-day life. The filmmaker said that it was the the natives that approached him to come and aid them in their attempt to publicize the dam's construction. "[They] were desperate, I could not turn away," said the 56-year-old filmmaker.
Cameron didn't elaborate how he would use the footage, if he would put it into a short film or include it in a longer feature length film. He has already made the trek to Brazil twice and already shot a short film about the opposition to the damming of the Xingu River. That film will be included on the Avatar: Special Edition DVD which is slated for release around the holidays.
