Avatar: Special Edition DVD will have even more new scenes
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, August 24, 2010

When Avatar: Special Edition arrives on 800 screens this coming Friday it will contain 8-and-a-half more minutes of new material. New scenes showing a Na'vi hunting party stalking a creature native to Pandora not seen in the original theatrical cut as well as more material showing the bioluminescence of the alien moon will be seen, but when the eventual DVD of the special edition comes out later this year, there will be even more added to the cut.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that when Avatar: Special Edition DVD streets it will contain at least 16 minutes of new material. "We tried to look at what people have responded to in the film and give them more of that," said producer Jon Landau to the showbiz trade. "There's a whole new scene that takes place in the (Na'vi) school, there's more night bioluminescence, there's new creatures, and there is a new action scene. The scenes don't just feel like added scenes -- they are very organic to the story and embellish it."
The Reporter also learned that a 3D DVD of Avatar won't be in the making until at least 2011, to allow more time for 3D Blu-ray and DVD players to enter peoples' homes.
Box office analysts are predicting that the special edition of Avatar likely won't crack the $10 million mark this coming weekend but nobody wants to say what kind of legs the world's highest-grossing movie will have in its second theatrical run.
