Is Super 8 the Cloverfield sequel trailer we'll see in front of Iron Man 2?
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Three years ago this coming summer, Paramount Pictures took a chance at creating a new viral marketing campaign around Cloverfield. Today, we all know what Cloverfield is and what its giant monster looks like, but back then, when you saw the teaser running in front of Transformers, speculation was high. Nobody knew for certain what Cloverfield was.
By this Friday, we might be seeing the teaser for the Cloverfield sequel, and it will be playing in front of Iron Man 2, another Paramount release. In today's 24 hours a day world of online film blogs and websites, how could something like this happen? If it is happening credit producer J.J. Abrams and a secret marketing coordination campaign that Hitfix's Drew McWeeny has finally broken word about.
What's going on: theater managers are receiving an email from Paramount telling them to expect the cans containing Iron Man 2 to arrive at their theater this Thursday -- along with a locked can containing the trailers they will play in front of IM2. You can't even open the locked film cans unless you have a electronic code -- and Paramount won't email that code to you until Thursday afternoon. That's highly unusual.
According to McWeeny, what's inside those locked cans is a teaser trailer for an unannounced Abrams project called "Super 8" and it's speculated that this is going to be connected to Cloverfield.
If this is indeed true then Abrams and Paramount have done the impossible: constructed a trailer for a well-known monster movie with zero advance word about its existence.
We'll see if the report is true by this Friday and the release of Iron Man 2.
