Third weekend for Avatar at #1, now over $1 billion box office

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, January 3, 2010

Before Avatar disappears from theaters James Cameron may have the top two biggest box office movies of all-time. In its third weekend out Avatar has once again come out at the top of the box office, adding $68.3 million dollars to its gross. Incredibly, that's a drop of just under 10% from last weekend. Avatar now stands with $352.1 million dollars collected domestic and another $666 million from international venues, pushing it over the $1 billion dollar mark of box office worldwide in just an astounding 17 days. Cameron's film is currently the fourth highest-grossing movie worldwide of all-time and 17th overall domestically. For highest box office films released in 2009 Avatar is now second only to Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($402 million.)

It's time to start considering that Avatar could go on to challenge Titanic for the coveted position of highest-grossing movie of all time. Titanic ended its run with $600 million dollars collected domestically and $1.2 billion internationally. That record has stood since 1998.

In a repeat of last week's showings Sherlock Holmes captured second place with $38.3 million in ticket sales. Even by showing up in second spot that picture's total now stands at $140 million dollars, virtually guaranteeing there will be that proposed sequel.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel is once again in third spot with $36.6m (total $157.3m). Also not changing its position from last week's top ten is the Meryl Streep romantic comedy It's Complicated with $18.7m in ticket sales (total $59.1m). The Blind Side also remains securely in fifth place for the second weekend in a row ($12.6m new, $209m total). Up in the Air also freezes in place at #6 with $11.3m in new revenue for a total cume of $45m). New Year's was favorable to Disney's The Princess and the Frog which saw a 10% uptick in ticket sales from last weekend ($10m new, $86m total).

When we finally reach eighth place do we see a movie swap its position from last week's top ten. The film in question is Sony's Did You Hear About the Morgans? which climbed up one spot with its $5.2m in sales (for a total of $25.6m in the picture's three weeks of release.) Nine is now in ninth place ($4.2m new, $14m total) and in tenth place is Invictus ($4.1m new, $30.7m total).
