Avatar is making good coin for The IMAX Corporation. In a press release sent out late this evening the company proclaims its delight with Avatar earning $28 million dollars from just 179 domestic screens. Globally Avatar has earned $39 million from 249 screens in its two weeks of release. From screenings held this past holiday weekend the sci-fi actioner netted a very impressive $8.8 million alone.

"Consumers are clearly seeking out IMAX as the way to experience James Cameron's latest blockbuster, and this weekend's results reinforce how well this groundbreaking film plays to our audience," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Avatar is well on its way to becoming our highest grossing Hollywood IMAX title."

Cameron had hopes that when he was making Avatar there would be a lot more 3D and IMAX equipped theaters. Still, $28 million in ticket sales from just the IMAX theaters across North America should send a clear signal that, with the right event movie, audiences will want to experience it on the IMAX screen.

The Dark Knight is the highest grossing IMAX movie with $55 million dollars in domestic ticket sales.
