Yeah, damn it!
I still don't feel like we got them with the Banderas movies. The first one was an origin story, and the second one was the Zorro version of a Marvel Family tale.
There's a new Zorro movie being developed, and which has just found its sword-wielding hero.
Mexican-born Gael Garcia Bernal has won the part in Zorro Reborn, which is being made for 20th Century Fox. There's still no director attached to the project, but Fox is hunting one down, hoping to have their movie rolling by the summer.
The screenplay is by Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the two writers whose other script, Harker, is in development at Warner Bros. That one also takes a classic character from 19th century fiction (in Harker's case, the future husband of Mina Murray) and reimagines the young lawyer as a Scotland Yard detective.
Zorro Reborn won't be set in the tradition time frame as most Zorro stories, in 19th centiry Mexico. Instead, Variety claims that Shipman and McGreevy are moving things to the 21st century. Curiously, the setting also won't be in California or Mexico.
The last movie that featured the character was 2005's The Mask of Zorro which starred Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Gael Garcia Bernal starred opposite amanda Seyfried in Letters to Juliet, Mammoth, Blindness and 2000's Amores Perros.

Oh, we definitely did not get them with the Banderas movies.
And why isn't this movie called Zorro Rises?
