Shortly before the release of The Thing prequel two months ago, I had heard rumors that the studio decided to mask the practical creature effects with computer generated (CG) imagery.
When I saw the movie, it was plain to recognize the CG FX for the Thing creatures. And indeed, the CG effects were solid and good work.
I had started to believe that maybe the practical work done for the movie didn't look right, and Universal had to use CG to mask up the parts that looked wrong.
Now, Amalgamated Dynamics Incorporated (ADI for short) have releaed a sizzle reel showing the work they did creating the practical effects for 2011's The Thing.
They look pretty solid, too.
If you've seen this year's The Thing movie then you'll have a mental image in your mind of how the movie's CG FX looked compared to ADI's practical FX. After seeing the quality of ADI's Thing creature effects, the question I have to ask is why Universal decided that ADI's work needed covering up with the CG effects.
I'd embed ADI's YouTube video but they've disabled embedding. Instead, watch it on YouTube.
There's a bigger story behind this decision. Eventually it will leak out.
One other thing: near the end of the ADI video there's scenes showing a creature called "Pilot". It looks like this creature was supposed to be seen inside the Thing's crashed UFO. If you've seen the 2011 movie, then you already know no such creature or scene like this was shown.
