UPDATE! Is Benicio Del Toro playing Khan in Star Trek?

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, December 2, 2011

This story's headline asks the big question, one so big that I'll repeat it once again: is Benicio Del Toro playing one of Star Trek's most iconic villains, Khan Noonian Singh?

The role was first played by Ricardo Montalban over 40 years ago in the first Star Trek TV series, then reprised by the same gentleman in what many (myself included) believe is the best movie in the Star Trek series, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

The big news was exclusively reported by Latino Review and my man El Mayimbe. This guy has been dead on right so many times, with so many scoops, so if he says that Del Toro is playing Khan, it's coming from inside the production.

Officially, none of the key creative team working on Star Trek 2 have dared say that we'll see a classic Trek villain in the next movie. While seeing a younger Khan would certainly put asses in seats, it's still a risky move. By choosing to go with a classic Trek bad guy as the next film's adversary, it threatens to raise concern that J.J. Abrams and his writing team don't have something new up their sleeve. As well, it invites critics to compare the next Trek to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, the Citizen Kane of the series. and if the new movie doesn't live up to the cool factor of that original 1982 movie, then Abrams risks losing all that good will he generated with his 2009 reboot.

If Benicio is indeed playing Khan, then how does the confirmed casting of Alice Eve in the movie factor into the equation?

El Mayimbe's scoop is going to light the fanboy community on fire and there's no way it won't reach all the way to Abrams' team. Now we wait and see what happens.

UPDATE!: Shortly after the news broke, HitFix's Drew McWeeny called up J.J. Abrams and asked him the Space Seed question: "Is Benicio playing Khan?" Abrams to-the-point answer: "Not true."

So far there hasn't been a rebuttal from Latino Review's camp.

I think everyone's just been assuming this for a while.

I also think it's a swing with more potential for a strike than for home run.  It's the same problem Snyder's Superman is facing with going back to the Zod well.  It sends the message that there aren't more interesting things to do with the property than a rehash.

Sure, there are interesting things that could be done, but it will be an uphill battle to convince people of this.  The altered time line established in the first NewTrek gives the writers some freedom to go in some Ultimate Marvel-type directions, but that could be a blessing as well as a curse.  The Ultimate imprint often feels like a subversion stunt, which takes some of the bite out of what they want to accomplish with it.

"You think Wolverine is safe? Well think again, Baby!  This is the Ultimate Universe!  You don't know what to expect!  What's that?  You think Absorbing Man is a man?  Well, prepare to have your preconceptions dashed, you miserable simpleton!  This the is the Ultimate Universe!  We can rape MJ to death and make Peter marry Gwen if we want to!  No one's safe!  You don't know what to expect, asshole!"

Anyway, it can get tedious.  Sometimes it's awesome.  Much of the time it's not.

Is it okay if I put the hype meter for this movie at 100%?  No?  All right.

Can we really trust what Abrams told McWeeny, though?
