Trailer: 30 Days of Night - Dark Days

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Monday, July 26, 2010

I liked the 30 Days of Night movie. Call me an old school kid but I believe vampires are something to be feared and hunted down, not get cuddly and play baseball with. (The irony that David Slade directed 30 Days of Night and then The Twilight Saga: Eclipse isn't lost on me, but everyone needs to make money to pay their mortgage, right?)

While the 30 Days of Night film wasn't a bona fide hit, it grossed enough that Sony Pictures made a direct-to-DVD sequel. Dark Days is the title of that sequel and it follows the story of Stella Oleson, one of the few survivors of Barrow, Alaska, after vampires came and slaughtered nearly the entire town so that they could feed while a month-long darkness enshrouded the town.

Steve Niles is the creator of the 30 Days of Night franchise and for the Dark Days D-2-DVD he's also the co-writer of the screenplay. Dark Days follows the second 30 Days of Night comic book mini-series by picking up a year after the attack in Barrow. Stella is traveling the country trying to bring awareness of the existence of vampires to the public. She's laughed at and relugated to speaking in rooms filled with conspiracy theorists and fringe followers. But once she arrives in L.A., she quickly is able to demonstrate to the non-believers that vampires are real. That attracts the attention of one of the top leaders of the vampires, Lilith, and quickly Stella is in a war where she has become the hunted.

That's the set up of Dark Days. You'll see some of that executed in the new trailer for the movie which comes courtesy of Bloody Disgusting.

I'm not sure how they can pull this off.  They made the vampires, feral non-English speakers in the original film and exorcised any mention of the Vampire society, social structure or disputes within it, along with the whole New Orleans sub-plot all of which is key for the 2nd story.
