Tough times for Stargate MMO employees
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Sunday, December 7, 2008
One needs look no further than the front page of many newspapers to see that the financial markets are in turmoil but if you know a little about the start-up business then stories of companies running out of cash are common. The latest firm to fall victim to this malady appears to be Cheyenne Mountain Entertainment, the developer working on Stargate Worlds, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game based on MGM's popular Stargate SG-1 television franchise. It's been almost three years since the game was first announced and fans have been left wondering what's happening behind the company's closed doors. Unfortunately, it appears that a cash crunch has hit Cheyenne.
As first reported by Gamespot, a website has gone up counting the number of days since employees were paid at Cheyenne. Gamespot asked Cheyenne for a comment and was told that "Like many start ups, we face the same cash-flow issues that all pre-revenue companies face. We have maintained a core of dedicated investors, but the new economic realities are focing us to seek out additional sources of funding and that's what we're doing."
After admitting to their financial woes, the company spun things in a positive direction by saying that a second phase beta would be announced shortly. In short, progress is continuing to be made on the game.
