Taken 2 gets Columbiana director, Fox distribution
Posted by Den Shewman on Thursday, May 5, 2011
Really, Liam Neeson has to stop letting his kids vacation in Europe.
Taken 2 writer/producer Luc Besson announced that Olivier Megaton (best action director name ever!) will direct the sequel. Megaton directed Transporter 3, and his new revenge thriller Columbiana stars Zoe Saldana and opens September 2. Variety reports that Liam Neeson will once again star. Script is by Besson, who has written all the films in the franchise and a heck of a lot of other stuff.
There's good reason for a sequel to Taken: not only was it a great adrenaline boost of a movie, but the $25 million-budget picture was number one on 2008's Super Bowl weekend and ended up pulling in $226 million worldwide.
Besson’s Transporter series has been a proving ground for directors. Pierre Morel, director of the first Transporter, directed the first Taken, and Louis Letterier jumped from directing Transporter 2 to The Incredible Hulk and later Clash of the Titans. So that’s the second Transporter movie, the second Hulk movie and the second (remake) Titans movie. Is this a trend, Louis?
Besson also announced that Fox, the original distributor of Taken, has signed on for worldwide distribution rights for Taken 2, excluding certain territories that EuropaCorp will handle.
