He's considered by many to be the master of horror fiction and one of the publishing industry's biggest authors ever but when it comes right down to it, Stephen King likes to show that he's just a regular guy. In his latest weekly column for Entertainment Weekly, the author of The Stand, 'Salem's Lot, Christine and dozens of other bestselling novels tells us what flicks he enjoyed the most these past twelve months.
Of the movies on King's list about half are also turning up on the top 10 list for most film critics, but several surprise choices are also on Steve-o's vetted roll call -- including not just one but two Jason Statham movies. And the writer is the first to admit he's not trying to take Roger Ebert's job away from him.
"I'm not trustworthy when it comes to movies," King writes in his piece. "I'm two-minded about them. Take this year's Saw film. I sat there in my favorite seat -- third row middle, so the screen towers above me -- and my forebrain was thinking, Oh, man, this is the year's biggest pile of cinematic dog vomit. But the rest of my brain is thinking, I'm at the moooooovies! IS THIS GREAT OR WHAT?"
King's top 10 movies for 2008 are:
- The Dark Knight
- Slumdog Millionaire
- WALL-E
- Tropic Thunder
- Funny Games
- The Bank Job
- Lakeview Terrace
- The Ruins
- Redbelt
- Death Race

Fucking "DEATH RACE?" I never would have guessed it.
I'm glad to see that he gave the nod to Haneke's "Funny Games." Just as good as the first iteration, and probably the biggest mindscrew available to US audiences this year.
