Star Wars saga coming to theaters in 3D

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, September 28, 2010

So it's now been made official that all six Star Wars movies are being converted into the latest 3D projection technology. The first of the lot to be released in 2012 is The Phantom Menace. Depending upon where your heart is about the prequel trilogy, that might be bad news for you.

George Lucas is trying to quell any fears that Lucasfilm is going to cheap out and release inferior quality 3D versions of the beloved space opera. He's claiming that only the high-end post-production 3D companies will be used to turn all six Star Wars movies into a full 3D experience like Avatar (and not the botched job the 3D version of Clash of the Titans turned out to be.) But Lucas hasn't amassed a six billion dollar film franchise for being a lousy businessman: he'll test the waters with The Phantom Menace first in '12, and if the audience demand is there, then Episode II: Attack of the Clones will follow in 2013, and so on, with a new 3D Star Wars film coming out every year.

Lucas is also taking advantage of the rush for theater owners to convert their screens to a rich 3D experience. The huge box office success of Avatar and Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland has shown theater owners that there is money to be made by having more 3D capable theaters in their roster, and hundreds of new 3D screens are being readied every month. Lucas took a similar shrewd business route when he allowed computer generated graphics develop throughout the 1990s before committing to make the new Star Wars trilogy. Even though the man owned one of the industry's leading effects houses (Industrial Light & Magic), he let other studios spend their budgets pushing ahead CG before opening his own purse-strings and letting the ILMers code Jar Jar Binks for our viewing pleasure.

As prices drop for 3D DVD players and more homes have one, expect 3D DVD versions of the Star Wars films to be announced in the coming years -- but perhaps not individually, and not shortly after their initial theatrical run.

I find it amazing that something that shaped my childhood so completely, through films, cartoons, comic books, toys, games and my own personal "play" experiences can elicit such a "meh" response from me.

Such is the shite-power of the prequels.

I want 3D to die.

I think it may be a bad business decision to lead with the prequels.  No one will care by the time the originals roll out.

The Flannelled One doesn't care that people won't care!  He is still convinced the Prequels are worthy additions to the saga.

I doubt it.
