On September 12 all six Star Wars films are slated to be released on Blu-ray. In addition to featuring new deleted material, cleaned-up video and audio and new interviews, there's also been changes done to some of the scenes in the films. Yeah, it's the Star Wars Special Edition: The Special Edition.
Tonight news leaked on the web of some of the new changes done to two of the films, 1977's A New Hope and 1983's Return of the Jedi. Judging from the comments left on other sites and the cries of anguish I've been seeing on Twitter, the one change that has every purist Star Wars fan up in arms is adding a cry of "Nooooo!" from Darth Vader as he watches the Emperor fry Luke near the climax of Jedi.
Some of you may remember that moment near the end of Revenge of the Sith where the newly sealed Vader gets told by the Emperor that Padme is dead. You remember that, don'tcha?
Well, when the rumor broke it was Devin at Badass Digest that was first to confirm it, via a source that had a copy of the Star Wars Blu-ray in their possession. Shortly thereafter I received a tip to go look at a YouTube user's account and there it was, uploaded for the world to see:
The YouTube user, DrewtonTube, also posted several other clips from the Star Wars Blu-rays that show the changes done, like this one from Jedi showing us Wicket the Ewok's newly created eyelids:
Or this one which shows a member of the Dug species, first seen in The Phantom Menace, now added to the members of Jabba's palace, as well as a new shot which shows the size of Jabba's fortress door:
I'm certain all the changes will be posted on video sharing sites in the next day or two, and that a full list of all the new digital additions to the six Star Wars films on Blu-ray will emerge.
