Star Trek's new Kirk deemed Hollywood's future star

Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Tuesday, February 3, 2009

The new captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise is meeting with the approval of theater owners nationwide. Chris Pine has been selected as the Male Star of Tomorrow by the members of ShoWest, the annual gathering for the National Association of Theater Owners. Pine will accept his award on April 2.

Every year the members of NATO select a male and female actor that they believe will turn into a powerful box office draw in the years to come. Past award winners have included Shia LaBeouf (Transformers), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Hayden Christensen (Revenge of the Sith), Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Emma Roberts (Hotel For Dogs), Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) and Alison Lohman (Beowulf).

Pine's new movie, Star Trek, opens on May 8.

Hm. Nice company. Out of that list, only Hudson and Hathaway have top-flight careers to speak of. I have yet to see LaBeef in a role that actually requires an actor; he's not the box office draw, the sfx around him are.

And Ledger's dead.

Yup, Pine may be brilliant, but a list that has Routh and Christensen on it ain't much to shout about. Although in fairness, Christensen is probably more of a victim of Lucas' inability to direct actors and Routh has been tied to an iconic role with a non-moving sequel for years.

....says "Kill Bond, NOW!"
