Star Trek video game announced for 2012
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Friday, June 3, 2011
While development on the follow-up to 2009's hugely successful reboot of Star Trek has been as slow as trying to maneouver through a Tholian web, today Paramount Digital Entertainment announced that a brand new Trek adventure would be arriving on the major game consoles the summer next.
Simply called Star Trek, the game will be the first to be set in the J.J. Abrams universe. It will also be the first Star Trek video game that allows for co-op gameplay, letting players pick between stepping into the boots of either Kirk or Spock. Digital Extremes, the creators of The Darkness 2, are developing the game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
Paramount Digital Entertainment isn't talking too much about the storyline, save that the Captain of the Enterprise and his first officer have to work together to stop a "legendary enemy race" from conquering the galaxy. A piece of art from the game was also released which shows Spock and Kirk in the new style spacesuits. From a Trekkie perspective, it's interesting to note that Spock is holding a new weapon. Will the next Star Trek movie incorporate that piece into its continuity?
Star Trek movie screenwriters/producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have thought up the game's outline and are collaborating with God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk in fleshing it out.
The next Star Trek movie is scheduled for release in the summer of 2012, so it's likely that the game and film will arrive that same week, the final one in June.
