Sherlock Holmes trumps Avatar on Christmas Day
Posted by Patrick Sauriol on Saturday, December 26, 2009

The makers of Sherlock Holmes and Avatar both had a fantastic Christmas Day with both pictures eclipsing the record of the highest box office gross on 12/25. On its opening day Warner Bros.' Holmes came out on top of the pile with an estimated $24.8 million dollars while 20th Century Fox's Avatar had a second Friday gross of $23.5 million. Both films easily surpassed the $19.5 million Christmas Day opening of Marley & Me, set just last year.
Both movies are on track to have $70 million dollar weekends, a first for the industry. Avatar now stands with a $160 million dollar domestic haul in eight days of release.
In third spot was Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $14.5 million.
Weekend box office estimates will roll in tomorrow and the final tallies will be known by Monday.
